Ballet moderne: Étienne-Jules Marey, 1890.

The stirrup had become the punctum Archimedis, the vantage point from which Lynn White, Jr., reconstructed the history of feudalism. What White demonstrated still exerts a kind of magic, even after synthetic approaches such as his have fallen out of favour.95 Even when his book was published in the early 1960s, the author was charged with claims of technological determinism and excessive speculation.96 But the criticism could not shake the old cavalryman; he was inspired by a revelation that came to him in the mid-1930s when he discovered the French Annales school of historiography. It was reading the work of Marc Bloch that led him to stumble across the wondrous hippologist Lefebvre des Noëttes, whom he later referred to as ‘an eccentric of genius’.97 It had dawned on him that there could be a place for the history of technology other than in the back seat of history and the humanities.
